Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

What is All Star cheerleading?

All Star cheerleading is a dynamic co-ed competitive sport where teams, consisting of boys and girls ages 3 and up, perform routines featuring tumbling, stunts, jumps, pyramids, and dance. These teams compete at various levels, from local and regional events to national and world championships. Our teams are structured with skill levels ranging from 1 to 6, allowing athletes of different experience levels to join!

Does my child need prior cheerleading experience?

No! We welcome athletes of all experience levels. Whether your child is a complete beginner or has competed before, there’s a place for them at UMAS.

What ages do you accept?

We have teams for a wide range of ages. Contact us at umas@umdgc.com and we can help find the right fit for your child.

Tryouts & Evaluations

What should I expect at Evaluations?

All Star cheerleading uses Evaluations to create teams. Day 1 of Evaluations consists of tumbling, jumps, dance, and calisthenic exercises. Day 2 of Evaluations are Stunting Callbacks to showcase your stunting skills (top girls, bases and backs) in groups.

Most athletes are placed on teams according to tumbling skills and relatively similar ages, however, we are also looking for exceptional skills such as center jumpers, center dancers, strong bases and flexible top girls. Prepare to show all of your best skills, so that our coaches know what your strengths are! Trust the process. If you are unsure what level you fall in, check out the Instagram video links below to match your tumbling skills to your appropriate level.

How do I sign up for an evaluation?

Fill out the Season 13 Interest Form on our homepage and you’ll receive an email with clinic and eval sign-up details before it’s released to the public.

What should my child wear to an evaluation?

Athletic wear and cheer or athletic shoes. Hair should be pulled back and away from the face.

What if my child doesn’t make a team

We’ll always communicate next steps and options. Our summer classes are a great way for athletes to build skills and prepare for future seasons.

Schedule & Commitment

What is the commitment?

Our season begins in June and runs through late April or early May. (Our younger Novice and Prep teams begin their season in September. Each team practices 2 or 3 times per week, and at the higher athlete levels, additional practices may be added prior to competitions. Our Elite and Worlds teams also attend choreography and stunting camps at the gym during the summer and on several weekends during the fall. To best prepare our teams for success, attendance is mandatory for all practices, camps, clinics, showcases and competitions.

How long is the season?

The competitive season typically runs from late spring/summer through April of the following year.

How many competitions are there?

The number of competitions varies by team, but most teams compete in local, regional, and national events throughout the season.

Can my child do other sports while on a UMAS team?

Many of our athletes participate in other activities! We recommend discussing scheduling with our staff so we can find the best fit.
